Sustainable living is often associated with environmentally friendly behavior such as reducing the use of plastic, planting trees, using public transportation and so on...
A sustainable lifestyle is a lifestyle that considers its impact on the environment, social and economic aspects to support long-term prosperity. This includes considerations of ecology, social justice, and economic well-being.
But did you realize that being on time is also a way of living sustainably? Being on time means we don't waste resources. Try to imagine a meeting room that has been prepared since 2 o'clock with the AC and lights on and then waiting for someone who never comes. As soon as we arrived, the meeting went on for a long time and in the end the completion schedule was further delayed, even though the main discussion was only 15 minutes.
Imagine how many resources, time that could be used for something more useful are just wasted. And of course, when one schedule is postponed, everything is postponed. After all, time is also a resource, right?
When we cannot predict how many things we can complete today just because time cannot be predicted well, then there is a lot of waste and it means we are not living sustainably.
The following are examples of a sustainable lifestyle:
- Use environmentally friendly transportation such as cycling, walking, or using public transportation.
- Reduce the use of chemicals and start switching to organic products, such as changing chemical soap to lerak soap, producing eco enzymes as natural cleaners and purifiers.
- Choose products that support a sustainable and environmentally friendly lifestyle, choose local products, and support and implement the "Reduce-Reuse-Recycle" principle.
- Applying a capsule wardrobe, namely buying clothes in basic styles and colors that are timeless and easy to mix and match without having to have a lot of clothes. This lifestyle will reduce fabric waste caused by the fast fashion trend.
- Bring shopping bags, drinking bottles and cutlery from home to minimize plastic use.
- Choose food that is produced in an environmentally friendly manner and supports local agriculture.
- Support local communities and participate in social activities.
- Choosing to cycle or walk as an alternative transportation reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
- Buy used or secondhand goods to help reduce waste production and extend the life of products.
- Reducing consumption of animal products can help reduce environmental impacts, such as deforestation and methane gas emissions from livestock.
- Recycling and waste segregation practices help reduce the amount of waste entering landfills, optimizing the reuse of certain materials. Recycled waste can be sent to a waste bank and organic waste can be composted at home.
- Supporting local products helps reduce the carbon footprint created by long-distance shipping and transportation, while empowering the local economy.
- Choosing public transportation over private vehicles can reduce exhaust emissions and traffic congestion, as well as reduce the need for parking spaces.
- Water-saving practices, such as repairing leaks and using water-saving equipment, help conserve critical water resources.
- Choosing products that have an eco-friendly label or organic certification can support more sustainable production.
- Continuously increasing knowledge about environmental issues and sharing information with others can help spread awareness and inspire positive action.
- Using renewable energy sources such as solar power or wind power for electricity needs can help reduce dependence on fossil fuels which can be detrimental to the environment.
