Wudu is the holy first step towards being present in worship, especially when we want to pray. Imitating the rules of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in the procedure of performing ablution, we not only take care of our physical purity, but also follow the best example that has ever existed in human history.
Shaykh Muhammad Fahd and Shaykh Bin Baz, in the book "The Nature of Ablution & Prophetic Prayers," explain that ablution is a holy method that has been established by Allah SWT, namely by using holy water on certain parts of the body, as explained in the Shari'a. . However, ablution can also be interpreted as a form of self-purification before praying.
The requirements of ablution are stipulated by Allah SWT directly in His word in Surat Al-Maidah verse 6:
O you who have believed, when you stand for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet. To the ankles
Latin: Yā ayyuhal-lażīna āmanū iżā qumtum ilaṣ-ṣalāti fagsilū wujūhakum wa aidiyakum ilal-marāfiqi wamsaḥū biru'ūsikum wa arjulakum ilal-ka'bain(i),
Meaning: O you who believe, when you stand up to pray, then wash your face and your hands up to the elbows and wipe your head and (wash) your feet up to the ankles.
The Correct Procedure of Wudu according to the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW
In this verse, we understand that Allah SWT commands ablution and at the same time provides appropriate guidance on how to carry it out. The Prophet Muhammad SAW, as the messenger of Allah, was present in this world to provide a more in-depth explanation of His teachings which were initially general in nature.
Through the actions recorded by the Prophet's companions in various hadith narrations, we can learn the correct ablution procedure in accordance with the teachings of the Sunnah. This is also confirmed in the book "Fiqih Sunnah Wanita" by Abu Malik Kamal bin Sayyid Salim.
It is narrated that, "Uthman bin Affan asked for water for ablution, and then he performed ablution; he washed his palms three times, then he rinsed and inhaled water with his nose, then he washed his face three times, then he washed his right hand up to the elbow three times times, then his left hand also in the same way, then he wiped his head, then he washed his right foot up to the ankle three times, then his left foot in the same way."
After that he (Uthman bin Affan) said, 'I have seen the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) perform ablutions like mine, and then he (PBUH) said, "Whoever performs ablutions like my ablutions, then he prays two rak'ahs, and does not talk to himself in two rak'ahs. his prayer, then his past sins have been forgiven for him." Ibnu Shihab added, 'And our scholars said, "This (procedure of) ablution is the most perfect ablution that a person performs for prayer." (HR Bukhari & Muslim)
Quoting this hadith, the correct procedure for ablution according to the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW is as follows:
1. Intention in the heart to perform ablution
I intended to perform ablution to remove the minor ritual prayer, as an obligation for God Almighty.
Latin: Nawaitul whuduua liraf'il hadatsil asghari fardal lillaahi ta'aalaa
Meaning: "I intend to perform ablution to eliminate the small hadats of fardhu because of Allah Ta'ala"
2. Reading basmalah, "bismillaahirrahmaanirrahiim".
3. Wash both palms three times
4. Gargle three times
5. Breathe water into the nose three times
6. Wash all visible parts of the face three times
7. Wash both hands up to the elbows, starting from the right and then the left, three times
8. Wipe your head three times
9. Wash both ears three times, starting with the right and then the left
10. Wash both feet up to the ankles three times, also starting from the right then the left foot

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who purify themselves. . Glory be to You
Oh God, and with Your praise there is no god but You, I ask Your forgiveness and I repent to You
Latin: Asyhadu an laa ilaaha illa Allah wahdahu laa syarika lahu, wa asyhadu anna muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuuluhu. Allahummaj 'alnii minat tawwaabiina waj 'alnii minal mutathaahiriina subhaanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika laa ilaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atuubu ilaika.
Meaning: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone with whom there is no partner and I also bear witness that Muhammad is His servant as well as His messenger. O Allah, make me among those who repent and make me among those who a person who is pure. Holy are You, O our Lord, and all praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no God but You. I ask for forgiveness and repent to You."
Imam Nawawi in the book Al-Adzkar explains about this one thing, according to him, "As for the prayers that are read at each part of ablution, there is no basis at all from the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW."
Furthermore, Imam Nawawi stated, "Fiqh scholars say that it is sunnah to recite prayers for each member of the ablution based on the words of Salaf scholars, they also add and subtract from the reading of the prayer. As a result they say that after reading the basmalah then you can continue with the prayers that widely known from Salaf scholars.
