Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, has experienced a series of major eruptions starting Thursday night (March 20, 2025) until Friday morning (March 21). There were very strong rumblings, bursts of fire, large explosions, and ejections of material that once again terrorized residents who had been in the safe zone.
Herman Yosef Mboro from the Lewotobi Male Volcano Observation Post said that the eruption occurred six times. "There were visible bursts of glowing lava and flames," said Herman, who was monitoring from the observation post. The distance from the post to the summit of the mountain is approximately 7 kilometers.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has raised the status of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) from alert to standby. This is due to an increase in volcanic seismic activity reaching 117 times.
"The activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in NTT Province has been raised from Level III (Alert) to Level IV (Caution)," wrote PVMBG in its statement on its official X (Twitter) account, Friday (21/3/2025).
PVMBG stated that the alert status has been in effect since Thursday (20/5) starting at 22:30 WITA. The community around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is urged not to engage in any activities within a radius of 7 km and 8 km in the Southwest and Northeast sectors from the eruption center.
The community is urged to be aware of the potential for rain lahar floods in rivers that originate at the peak of the mountain. Not only that, the community is also asked to remain calm and continue to follow the directions of the local government.
"The community around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is on alert for the potential of lahar floods in the rivers that originate from the peak of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki if heavy rain occurs, especially in the areas of Dulipali, Padang Pasir, Nobo, Klatanlo, Hokeng Jaya, Boru, Nawakote," wrote PVMBG.
Furthermore, PVMBG urges the affected community from the ash rain of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki to wear masks or mouth-nose coverings to avoid the dangers of volcanic ash on the respiratory system. The community can monitor the developments of the activity and recommendations of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki through the Magma Indonesia application/website.

According to the news agency Antara, based on the information released by PVMBG of the Geological Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the eruption occurred twice throughout yesterday. The eruptions occurred at 07:53 WITA and 20:26 WITA.
