Hari Nelayan Nasional diperingati - OSCARLIVING

National Fisherman Day is commemorated

National Fishermen's Day is commemorated every year on April 6 as a tribute to the important role of fishermen in ensuring the availability of protein and nutrition for the Indonesian people. This tradition serves not only as an expression of gratitude for the abundance of the sea but also as a reminder of the importance of advancing the welfare of fishermen.

This age-old tradition gives rise to various rituals, one of which is the Labuh Saji Ceremony held at Pelabuhan Ratu Sukabumi, West Java. This ceremony honors Nyi Putri Mayangsagara with the hope that the people will receive prosperity from their work as fishermen. Currently, this tradition has slightly changed with the replacement of offerings of buffalo or goat heads with the scattering of fish seeds, shrimp seedlings, and turtle hatchlings into the sea, as a symbol of fertility and hope for abundant catches.

"Indonesia, as an archipelagic country with a coastline of 81,000 km, has great maritime potential. However, the reality of the lives of fishermen is not in line with that potential. Issues such as a lack of knowledge, limited capital, and competition with foreign fishermen who catch fish illegally pose challenges for the fishermen. Moreover, the minimal support from the government for traditional fishermen further exacerbates their conditions."

Amid these challenges, marine and fisheries certifications such as MSC (Marine Stewardship Council), ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council), BAP (Best Aquaculture Practices), Friend of The Sea, and others, become important in ensuring the sustainability of marine resources and environmental protection. These certifications set international standards for responsible and sustainable fishing practices.
