Kelimutu, which is believed to be the lake of the Spirits

Kelimutu National Park is one of the national parks in Indonesia located in Pemo Village, Kelimutu District, Ende Regency, Flores, NTT.

The charm of the beauty of Lake Kelimutu is inseparable from the three-colored lake whose colors can change and also the development of myths that have long been believed by the local residents. The color changes of the three lakes are caused by the mineral composition found in the lakes.

The three lakes are named Tiwu Ata Polo (red lake), Tiwu Nua Muri Koo Fai (blue lake), and Tiwu Ata Mbupu (white lake). The three lakes have an area of about 1,051,000 square meters, and according to the beliefs of the local residents, they have different meanings according to their names.

- Tiwi Ata Mbupu, which is a white-colored lake, is believed by the local people to be a gathering place for the souls of deceased ancestors. The area of this lake reaches 4.5 hectares.

- Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai is a blue-colored lake that is believed by the local people to be a gathering place for the souls of young people who have passed away. The area of this lake is about 5.5 hectares. When viewed from above, the color of this lake is a bluish moss green.

- Tiwu Ata Polo, which is a red-colored lake, and the local residents believe that this lake is a gathering place for the souls of people who died and committed crimes during their lifetime. The area of this lake is only about 4 hectares with a depth of 64 meters. The change in water color of the lake located in the Kelimutu National Park area is the main attraction of this tourist destination. The local community also believes in certain myths behind the color changes.

This three-colored lake also serves as a distinguishing feature between this lake and other volcanic craters in Indonesia. Quoting from several sources, this tourist attraction in NTT was originally discovered by a Dutch national, Lio Van Such Telen. This occurred around 1915 and eventually attracted foreign tourists to visit.

The name Kelimutu consists of two words, namely 'Keli' and 'Mutu'. In the local language, Keli means mountain, while Mutu means to boil.

This lake not only offers the stunning beauty of its crater colors but also amazes anyone who witnesses the expanse of natural scenery in the Kelimutu mountains. Being surrounded by mountains makes this lake even more pristine and comfortable to visit.
