Office Chair Mechanics and How They Work

An ergonomic or pneumatic office chair is an important part of the modern office and is essential to ensure we remain comfortable throughout the day. Many of us are used to working eight or nine hours a day at a desk, five days a week; without a good office chair, we will surely suffer from neck and back pain, as well as general discomfort throughout the day.

We understand why office chairs are an important part of office life and working life, but how do office chairs work? This time we will discuss how each of our chairs is specially designed to ensure maximum comfort for the user.

Hydraulic - Work Chair Height Adjustment

Hydraulic / Gaslift (spring filled with air). This is connected to the piston, which then moves into the cylinder when the lever is activated. The piston further compresses the air in the chamber, raising the seat base, and when released, the air will decompress and the base will lower. The optimal seat height should allow the user to place both feet on the floor and comfortably rest their hands on the table. Adjustable height is important for users so they can maintain a comfortable posture throughout the workday, preventing them from slouching or crouching while performing their tasks.

Tilting Control & HDT - Adjustable Tilt Control and Lock

The tilt mechanism is the key function of the rocking feature on an office chair. It is usually modified with a large round knob or lever located under the seat of the chair. By using the tilt tension lever, you will increase or decrease the amount of force needed to make the chair rock or recline. The tilt lock uses a bar or lever to lock the chair in a certain upright position, combined with tilt tension so that users can adjust their chair's backrest depending on the task at hand. Locking the chair in an upright position can be useful for typing, but allowing the chair to recline can provide comfort during meetings.

Lumbar Support and Back Height Adjustment

The lower part of our spine naturally curves towards the abdomen, and the lumbar support is designed to support good posture and fill the gap between the lumbar spine and the seat of the chair. When positioned correctly, this device helps maintain our balance, keeping our shoulders and pelvis aligned while supporting the natural curvature of the spine. Many chairs come equipped with lumbar support and back height adjustments. Often modified by turning a knob located on the backrest frame, the backrest and lumbar support can be raised or lowered to meet the user's personal needs. The ratchet back height adjustment, popular on almost all modern office chairs, works by adjusting the height of the backrest and then locking it in place.

Adjustable Armrest

Although it may seem like a small feature, having adjustable armrests on your chair can make a big difference in terms of posture and comfort. There are several types of armchairs, usually loop or T-Arm designs that can be adjusted and operate on a simple lever. Typically located on the armrest itself, pulling this lever allows you to raise or lower the armrest to the optimal height before locking it in place. You can also purchase armrests with adjustable width and pivot, as well as 360-degree rotation. Having armrests at the right height is important to avoid repetitive strain injuries as well as neck and shoulder pain, allowing you to work comfortably for longer periods.
