The Origin of Pacu Jawi

The Minangkabau tribe is famous for its unique diversity of traditions which are still preserved today.

There is no information regarding the exact time regarding the beginning of the implementation of the Pacu Jawi tradition. However, the Pacu Jawi tradition has been carried out hundreds of years ago. This tradition started in a nagarai, namely Nagari Tuo (old village) Pariangan, Tanah Datar Regency. Pacu Jawi is an attempt by ancient farmers to find a good and correct way to plow. The reason is that at that time there was no way to plow like today.

The Pacu Jawi activity is a traditional Nagari (Village) children's game event that was born and developed in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra Province. Pacu Jawi can only be found in four sub-districts, namely Pariangan District, Rangkat District, Limo Kaum District, and Sungai Tarab District. Pacu Jawi activities are always eagerly awaited by the local community. The Pacu Jawi tradition is combined with community traditions in the form of processions carrying trays or jamba filled with food.

Usually, this tradition is carried out in the fourth week or at the close of Pacu Jawi and is a big event in this area.

Pacu Jawi has various benefits. Pacu jawi as a way to increase the selling price of cattle. A good cow is one that can run straight quickly and in tandem. This is indicated by the large amount of flying mud. Another benefit is as a place to improve jawi health.

The Pacu Jawi tradition has a unique philosophy, namely that leaders and ordinary people can walk together. This philosophy is based on Pacu Jawi activities, where two cows are used. The winner of this race is not the fastest participant, but the participant who can run straight will get the highest score. The unique thing about Pacu Jawi is that in this race there are no opponents. It is said that this method is done so that betting does not occur as in races in general.

The community of the host village will work together to clean the location, smooth the water channels, level the mud from the rice fields, and clean the rice fields used by the competition so that the fields are ready for replanting. Jawi racing activities are carried out four times a week every Saturday in four sub-districts, namely Sungai Tarab District, Pariangan District, Lima Kaum District, and Rangkat District. People from other sub-districts will go to the location of the competition which can be held in different sub-districts. The Pacu Jawi activity is very lively, because there are 500 to 800 cows in the competition. The time for Pacu Jawi to be carried out in the community's rice fields after harvest. Pacu Jawi is followed by paired jawi controlled by a jockey holding on to the plow handle. Jockeys who don't wear footwear run with their jaws in rice fields full of mud and water.

Jawi who wins the competition will have its selling price doubled and become the pride of its owner.
