Godafoss - Waterfall of the Gods

Goðafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The Skjálfandafljót river falls from a height of 12 meters with a width of 30 meters. A circular road passes by the waterfall, with parking available on both sides of the river and a paved road leading to the observation platform.

The history of this waterfall is related to the conversion of the Icelandic people to Christianity. Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, the spokesperson for the country's laws, decided that the official religion of the country would be Christianity in light of increasing pressure from other European countries, with Norway at the forefront. The original settlers of Iceland were mostly Norwegians, and to maintain peace, Þorgeir made the decision to convert.

"After that, he threw the statue of the ancient Norse god into the waterfall. The word in Icelandic for god is goð, so this waterfall has been called Goðafoss ever since. Goðafoss is a very beautiful waterfall with a fairly strong flow of water that is the result of glacier melt in the mountains."

There isn't much to do at Goðafoss besides admiring its waterfall, but the waterfall is so beautiful that you won't want to rush. Goðafoss is located on the Skjálfandafljót River, which you can approach from both opposing riverbanks. Most visitors enjoy the views from both sides of the river. It doesn't matter where you start, as there are parking areas on both sides and a crossing bridge to the north of the Ring Road that connects the two.

However, most people will tell you that the eastern edge has the best views of the waterfall and the basalt rocks beside it – you can get quite close to the top of the waterfall. You will also see some people climbing the rocks to reach the water's edge, but unless you are very confident, this is not recommended as you could easily slip and fall into the water. But don't worry! There is a large oval viewing platform so you won't miss anything.

On the west side, the elevated road runs along the edge of the gorge. There are benches to sit on that offer views of the water flowing over the rock surface unobstructed and Hrútey, the rock outcrop that divides the waterfall. The edge is tied with a rope, as the drop is far, and you don't want to go over it.

Goðafoss in Iceland was officially designated as a natural monument on June 17, 2020. The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, visited the waterfall in person and made the official announcement. The increased level of protection makes education and monitoring by park rangers more important.
