Godafoss - God's Waterfall

Goðafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The water of the Skjálfandafljót river falls from a height of 12 meters with a width of 30 meters. A loop road passes the falls, with parking available on both sides of the river and a paved path leading to the viewing platform.

The history of the waterfall is related to the conversion of Icelanders to Christianity. Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, the country's legal spokesman, decided that the country's official religion would be Christianity in line with increasing pressure from other European countries, with Norway being at the forefront. The original settlers of Iceland were mostly Norwegians, and to maintain peace, Þorgeir made the decision to convert.

After that, he threw the statue of the god of the Old Norse religion into the waterfall. The Icelandic word for god is goð, so the waterfall has been called Goðafoss ever since. Goðafoss is a very beautiful waterfall with quite strong water discharge which is the result of searching for Glesier in the mountains.

There's not much to do in Goðafoss apart from admiring the waterfall, but it's so beautiful you won't want to rush. Goðafoss is located on the Skjálfandafljót River, which you can approach from two opposite banks. Most visitors enjoy the views from both banks of the river. It doesn't matter where you start, as there are parking lots on both sides and a footbridge north of the Ring Road connecting the two.

However, most people will tell you that the eastern rim has the best views of the falls and the basalt rocks beside them – you can get quite close to the top of the falls. You will also see some people climbing over rocks to reach the water's edge, but unless you are very confident, this is not recommended as you will easily slip and fall into the water. But don't worry! There is a large oval viewing platform so you don't miss a thing.

On the west side, a terraced path leads along the edge of the ravine. There are benches to sit on that offer unobstructed views of the water cascading down the rock face and Hrútey, the rock outcrop that divides the waterfall. The edges are tied with ropes, because the fall is long, and you don't want to go over it.

Iceland's Goðafoss was officially designated a natural monument on June 17, 2020. The Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson, visited the waterfall in person and made an official announcement. Increased levels of protection make the education and supervision of park rangers more important.
