SWIMMING WITH SHARKS IN TAKABONARATE NATIONAL PARK

Taka Bonerate National Park is a marine park that has the third largest atoll area in the world after Kwajifein in the Marshall Islands and Suvadiva in the Maldives. The total area of this atoll is 220,000 hectares with a coral reef distribution reaching 500 km². This area is located in the Takabonerate District, Selayar Islands Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Since 2005, Taka Bonerate National Park has been nominated to UNESCO to become a World Heritage Site. As part of the Selayar Islands anniversary, a festival titled Sail Taka Bonerate or previously called the Takabonerate Island Expedition (TIE) is held at this location every year.

There are fifteen islands in the Taka Bonerate National Park, making it very suitable for diving, snorkeling, and other marine tourism activities. The topography of the area is very unique and interesting, where the atoll consists of clusters of coral islands and extensive submerged reef flats, forming a considerable number of islands. Among the coral islands, there are narrow, deep, and steep straits. Meanwhile, on the surface of the reef flats, there are many small, deep pools surrounded by coral reefs. At the lowest tide, dry land is clearly visible, interspersed with water puddles that form small pools.

this area is named Bone Riattang which means the Bone kingdom in the south or a sand mound in the south. In the era of the Gowa kingdom, it was referred to as Bone Irate which means the Gowa kingdom in the south or a sand mound in the south. However, some also interpret Taka Bonerate as a stretch of coral on sand (Molengraff 1929) in "Distribution and Development of Coral Reefs in Eastern Indonesia" refers to Taka Bonerate as Tiger Atoll or Tiger Island. The names of the islands in Taka Bonerate have undergone three changes, namely the name given by Molengraff in 1929, the name on the Dishidros map, and the name currently used in the local community.

The name of the Tiger Islands has been given various interpretations of different meanings. The interpretation deemed logical connects the name to the shape of the area and the location of the atolls within it, resembling the sharp and closely spaced teeth of a tiger. It implies a warning for humans, that anyone wishing to enter the area must first understand the islands. If not, that person will find it difficult to exit, as it is assumed they are already inside the mouth of the tiger. The naming of the islands, atolls, and sandbanks that form the Tiger Islands is now referred to as Kawasan Taka Bonerate, which is not just a name but carries meaning related to the resources it contains and the historical, socio-economic, and political events of past societies.

Takabonerate is a choice that is well-known to many, not only domestically but also internationally. Takabonerate, located in the Selayar Islands Regency of South Sulawesi Province, is a marine park that has the third largest atoll in the world after Kwajifein in the Marshall Islands and Suvadiva in the Maldives. The area of the atoll is approximately 220,000 hectares with a flat coral reef spread over 500 square kilometers.

In this national park, you can swim and play with sharks at the beach. The #Jalanjalanbersamaoliv team has conducted an expedition to Bonarate National Park and surveyed coral damage in the national park area.
