Memperpanjang masa pakai produk menghasilkan dampak lingkungan yang lebih besar dibandingkan tindakan lainnya - OSCARLIVING

Extending the lifespan of products has a greater environmental impact compared to other actions.

Sustainable consumption should not be reduced to reuse and recycling, according to SIFO researchers. Extending the lifespan of products is the only most effective action according to the research.

Imagine your phone getting slower. Instead of you buying a new phone, the retailer offers new software and a new battery, making the phone in your hand almost like new again. Or your sofa is stained and the cushions are damaged. What if the retailer offers...

steps to fix it and use your chosen materials?

"Usually, when we discuss sustainable consumption, we immediately introduce recycling and reuse. The circular economy is a concept that has been widely used lately. In addressing various sustainable strategies."

Instead of dismantling these products for recycling, we actually extend the product's lifespan.

"Extending the lifespan of products is the most effective action in a sustainable program. It is similar to recycling or the circular economy that is widely promoted today. However, the recycling process itself sometimes also requires carbon emissions in its process."

In practice, extending the lifespan of an item also fosters a person's understanding of the importance of taking care of their belongings and using them well, thus keeping their possessions away from landfills. Ultimately, this will become a person's lifestyle.

However, the long lifespan of products is rarely proposed as an environmental solution in debates. This is due to changes in lifestyle or the tendency of society to want to be stylish at a low cost, which is a demand of social media life. The abundance of cheap items that are not durable or have a short lifespan also reinforces this shift. As a result, products with a long lifespan, which are sometimes expensive, tend to be neglected.

Some views on "Reducing consumption means slowing down the pace of the economy"

A longer product lifespan or having durability will reduce consumption, and this is believed to have an effect on economic slowdown. Talking about economic growth is often associated with high levels of consumption, which means that the production wheel continues to turn with high demand.

"Our economy is based on the frequent purchase of new consumer products, and reducing consumption is difficult to debate politically. We must develop other ways and approaches within our current economic system."

"However, this is also somewhat contradictory to the concept of sustainability, but that does not mean it cannot be aligned. There are many ways to achieve that alignment. We must use the most effective approach, with lower costs while also reducing carbon usage."

There are several things that can be alternatives in aligning those matters, such as:

  • Loving your own belongings - 'The lifespan of a product is closely related to the consumer and the consumer's responsibility.'
  • "Use it when you really need it - the best solution in this case is for the business world to shift to alternative circular business models; such as various forms of leasing."
  • Caring for and repairing your items - Take the time to repair your belongings during your free time, which also extends the lifespan of your items. You can also have them repaired with the help and resources from third parties to fix your items.
  • Not replacing items that are not damaged or replacing items due to the demands of the times or trends.

"When society accepts reuse, and when buying second-hand products is acceptable, we have made a positive change to consumption standards."

Considering the Earth's old age and the constantly changing climate conditions, it would be wise for us to gradually change our lifestyle and start caring for the Earth for the sake of future generations.

This generation is responsible for the sustainability of the next generation and ensuring that the earth is still habitable for future generations. And it all starts with ourselves.
