Indonesia Soroti Pencapaian Iklim Saat Kunjungan Menteri Lingkungan Hidup Norwegia - OSCARLIVING

'Indonesia Highlights Climate Achievements During Visit of Norwegian Minister of Environment'

President Joko Widodo welcomed Norway's Minister of Climate and Environment, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen, along with his delegation at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, to discuss Indonesia's climate achievements. This important meeting reaffirms the ongoing partnership between Indonesia and Norway in addressing climate change, particularly in achieving the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 target.

The main discussion centered on the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target, which aims for significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from forestry and other land use. The Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, who accompanied President Jokowi, emphasized that Indonesia has received substantial international recognition and financial support for its climate action efforts. She explained that the main target discussed is the Forestry and Other Land Use Net Sink 2030 and that Indonesia has received an important contribution of approximately USD 156 million, equivalent to about 30.2 million tons of carbon.

Minister Siti Nurbaya successfully achieved Indonesia's success in reducing carbon emissions from 2020 to 2023. She noted that emissions decreased by 945 million tons in 2020, 889 million tons in 2021, 875 million tons in 2022, and although the figures for 2023 are still being calculated, she anticipates that the reduction will be even lower due to the El Niño event that year. Despite facing these challenges, the emission reductions remain well above 810 million tons each year, indicating that the percentage reductions are 48%, 43%, 41%, and around 40%, consistently exceeding the initial target of 31.89%. With international cooperation, the target could reach up to 43%.

On the same occasion, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani emphasized the importance of good governance in managing environmental funds and highlighted Indonesia's reputation as a key factor in attracting international support. She stressed that the trust built in governance and fund management based on results shows that this is not just about money, but most importantly, it is about Indonesia's reputation in managing its own life ecosystem, which is very important for its people.

"Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen from Norway expressed his admiration for Indonesia's significant achievement in reducing deforestation by 90% and its ambitious efforts in land rehabilitation. He commented that Indonesia has made significant and extraordinary progress in recent years regarding deforestation. The efforts to reduce deforestation by 90% and the rehabilitation ambition towards the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target are achievements that he believes should and need to be recognized by the world."

This bilateral meeting not only highlights the beneficial cooperation between Indonesia and Norway but also strengthens the commitment of both countries to address global climate challenges through impactful environmental governance.
