The friendly Myanmar today is inseparable from its history as one of the countries influenced by Buddhism, embraced by the Burmese people. The Burmese people who now inhabit Myanmar are the descendants of the subjects of the Pagan kingdom, which was the precursor to the establishment of the country of Myanmar by uniting the surrounding regions.
However, the kingdom is now just a history. Now the capital of its former territory, which has stood since the 13th century, has transformed into a beautiful old city called Bagan in Mandalay, Myanmar. Its history still remains. Bagan today has become a captivating historical tourist destination. Not to mention the stunning scenery. This magnificent view is presented through a stretch of thousands of ancient Buddhist temples and pagodas from the remnants of the kingdom.
Inside the pagoda, there is a Buddha statue that is a shame not to be captured by a camera. The beauty of this old building on the vast land is even more stunning with the presence of the vegetation growing around it. The collaboration of green colors blending with the brown of the pagoda temple presents a very beautiful natural painting.
TRAVERSING the streets along the roads in the city of Bagan, Myanmar, cannot be separated from the sight of ancient temples lined along the roadside. From the large and magnificent to the small ones tucked away in the corners of the streets. Unlike other temples in the Asian region, the temples in Bagan come in 2 colors: white and brick red.
Based on existing historical literature, the city of Bagan began to be built before the 10th century AD during the reign of the Pagan kingdom. This kingdom is the origin of the Burmese people, the largest ethnic group in Myanmar.
The temples in Bagan were built as places of worship and learning for followers of Buddhist teachings from Asia, including India, for about 5 centuries since their establishment. Over time, of the 10,000 temples scattered throughout the Bagan area, only about 2,200 temples still stand today. The most famous temple is Htilominlo Temple. This temple was built in the 13th century. Its structure appears magnificent. Inside the main building, there is a Buddha statue as a place of worship for followers of Buddhist teachings. Behind it, there is a temple complex as part of Htilominlo Temple. Among the thousands of temples, there is one largest pagoda, which is the Shwe Zi Gon pagoda. The striking difference between a pagoda and a temple is that the pagoda is built of gold. In addition to being a center of worship for followers of Buddhist teachings, the Shwe Zi Gon pagoda area is the city center of Bagan. Tourists can buy various souvenirs sold by local residents around the pagoda as typical Myanmar gifts.
For foreign tourists, Bagan is the main tourist destination in Myanmar. Like other tourist areas, there are many hotel options available with various prices and classes offered. Restaurants line the streets offering traditional Myanmar, Asian, and Western menus. Artworks are also rapidly growing as a supporting industry for tourism development. It is no wonder that the price standards in Bagan are also higher compared to other cities in Myanmar such as Mandalay and Yangon.
