US Raises Tariffs on Chinese Imports to 245%, Trade War Heating Up
The United States (US) has again increased import tariffs on goods from China to 245%. This tariff increase was implemented in response to China's retaliation.
The new tariffs are contained in an executive order detailing the retaliatory tariffs announced on April 2. The White House posted a fact sheet on the order to its website on Tuesday evening (April 15, 2025) local time.
"China now faces tariffs on imports to the United States of 245% as a result of its retaliatory actions," the White House said.
China previously raised import tariffs on US goods to 125% last Friday in retaliation against the Donald Trump administration, which increased tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, also giving a 90-day pause on levies from other US trading partners.
"Several months ago, China banned the export of gallium, germanium, antimony, and other key high-tech materials with potential military uses to the US," the fact sheet said.
"Just this week, China suspended exports of six heavy rare earth metals, as well as rare earth magnets, to cut off the supply of critical components to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies, and military contractors worldwide."
When asked about the 245% tariff at a press conference today, Wednesday (April 16, 2025), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian directed reporters to ask the US directly about the specific tariff. That was Beijing's response, as reported by China News Network .
Trump previously imposed a 10% tariff on imports from all US trading partners. He then postponed additional "reciprocal" tariffs imposed on dozens of US trading partners for 90 days. However, the increased tariffs on China were exempt.
China said that this US action increasingly demonstrates that the use of tariffs as a trade weapon has gone beyond reasonable limits.
Not remaining silent, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce warned that if the US continues to raise tariffs and worsen the situation, they are ready to take retaliatory action.
China has even imposed retaliatory tariffs of up to 125 percent on some US products, and has said it is ready to take further action if pressure from Washington continues.
"If the US persists in taking actions that are detrimental to us, we will retaliate decisively," read an official statement from China's Ministry of Commerce.
