China says it will not be afraid if a trade war and tariffs occur
China does not want to fight a trade war and tariffs, but will not be afraid when they come, said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson made the statement at a press briefing on Thursday (10/4) after United States President Donald Trump threatened to impose more tariffs on imported Chinese products.
Responding to a related question at a daily press briefing, Lin said that taking necessary countermeasures against US intimidation is not only about protecting China's sovereignty, security and development interests, but also about upholding international fairness and justice, maintaining the multilateral trading system and safeguarding the common interests of the international community.
"A just struggle will gain a lot of support," Lin said, adding that US actions are unpopular with many and will end in failure.
"We will never stand idly by as the Chinese people's legitimate rights and interests are violated, nor will we stand idly by as international economic and trade rules and the multilateral trading system are undermined," Lin said.
He also emphasized that if the US persists in launching a tariff war or trade war, China will fight to the end.
The US is putting its own interests above those of the international community and prioritizing its hegemonic interests at the expense of the legitimate interests of countries around the world, which will ultimately face increasingly strong resistance from the international community, Lin said.
