The Virtues of the Month of Ramadan: A Month Full of Forgiveness and Blessings

Every year, Muslims around the world look forward to the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan. The virtues of the month of Ramadan are immense because this month is filled with mercy, forgiveness, and blessings from Allah SWT. During this month, Muslims are required to fast for a full month, refraining from eating, drinking, and anything that can invalidate the fast from dawn until sunset.

"In addition to being the month of fasting, the virtues of the month of Ramadan are also reflected in the numerous opportunities to earn multiplied rewards. Allah SWT opens the gates of heaven wide and closes the gates of hell during this month. Therefore, understanding the virtues of the month of Ramadan will help Muslims to maximize their worship and enhance their spiritual quality."

1. The Month the Qur'an Was Revealed

"One of the greatest virtues of the month of Ramadan is the revelation of the Al-Qur'an as a guidance for mankind. Allah SWT says in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 185:"

"The month of Ramadan is the (month) in which the Al-Qur'an was revealed as guidance for mankind and as clear proofs of that guidance and the criterion (between what is right and what is wrong)."

The revelation of the Al-Qur'an in the month of Ramadan makes this month special. Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to read and study the Al-Qur'an more frequently in order to understand and practice its teachings in their daily lives.

In addition, the virtues of the month of Ramadan can also be attained by enlivening its nights with the recitation of the Qur'an, especially during the tarawih prayers and qiyamul lail. Reciting the Qur'an in this month will bring multiplied rewards and bring tranquility to the heart and soul.

2. The Door of Heaven is Opened, the Door of Hell is Closed

In a hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "When the month of Ramadan arrives, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained."

This hadith shows the virtue of the month of Ramadan as a month full of mercy and blessings. Allah SWT provides an opportunity for Muslims to more easily draw closer to Him by performing acts of worship without interference from the devil.

'Because the doors of heaven are opened, every good deed performed in this month has a higher value compared to other months. Therefore, the virtues of the month of Ramadan can be utilized by increasing righteous deeds such as prayer, charity, remembrance of Allah, and reading the Qur'an.'

Conversely, the closed door of hell serves as a sign that Allah SWT provides a great opportunity for His servants to repent and return to the right path. By understanding the Virtues of the Month of Ramadan, Muslims can take advantage of this month to enhance their faith and improve themselves.

3. The Night of Lailatul Qadar is Better than 1000 Months

One of the most awaited virtues of the month of Ramadan is the Night of Decree, a night that is better than a thousand months. Allah SWT says in Surah Al-Qadr verses 3-5:

"The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months. On that night, the angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) descend by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn."

Lailatul Qadar is a night full of blessings where Allah SWT forgives the sins of His servants and grants the prayers that are sincerely offered. The virtue of the month of Ramadan is further enhanced by this night, so Muslims are encouraged to increase their worship during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

Some practices that can be done to attain the virtues of Lailatul Qadar include:

  • Night prayer (qiyamul lail) such as tahajud and witir.

  • Increase your remembrance (dzikir) and prayers, especially the prayer taught by the Prophet Muhammad SAW:
"O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me." (O Allah, You are the Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me).

  • Reading the Qur'an and reflecting on its meaning.

  • Charity as a form of concern for others.

Due to the extraordinary virtues of the month of Ramadan, Muslims should strive to the best of their ability to enliven its nights with worship and prayer.

4. The Multiplying Rewards of Fasting

"The virtue of the month of Ramadan is also reflected in the immense reward of fasting. In a Qudsi hadith, Allah SWT says:"

"Every good deed of the son of Adam will be multiplied ten to seven hundred times. Except for fasting, for indeed fasting is for Me, and I Myself will reward it." (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

Fasting in the month of Ramadan is not only about abstaining from hunger and thirst, but also about controlling desires and increasing worship. The virtues of the month of Ramadan are evident in how fasting can enhance a servant's piety, as mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 183:

"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."

By understanding the Virtues of the Month of Ramadan, Muslims can be more sincere in performing the fast and attain maximum rewards.

5. Month of Forgiveness of Sins

"One of the main virtues of the month of Ramadan is as a month of forgiveness of sins. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:"

"Whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan with full faith and hopes for reward from Allah, then his past sins will be forgiven." (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)

In this month, Allah SWT opens the door of repentance wide for His servants who wish to improve themselves. The virtue of the month of Ramadan as a month of forgiveness can be utilized by increasing istighfar and asking for forgiveness from Allah SWT.

"In addition to fasting, other practices that can help obtain forgiveness in this month are:"

  • Performing tarawih prayer with devotion.
  • Increase istighfar and prayers of repentance.
  • Giving alms to the poor and needy.
  • Keeping the tongue from bad words.

By understanding the Virtues of the Month of Ramadan, Muslims can take this month more seriously as a momentum to return to Allah SWT.

As a month full of blessings, the significance of the month of Ramadan lies not only in the obligation to fast but also in the numerous opportunities to earn rewards, seek forgiveness, and draw closer to Allah SWT.

Understanding the significance of the month of Ramadan will help Muslims to maximize their worship and make the most of every moment in this holy month. May we all attain blessings and forgiveness in the month of Ramadan and become better servants afterwards. Ameen.
