IP Law Enforcement in Indonesia: Efforts and Achievements of the Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights

Enforcing intellectual property (IP) law is a crucial aspect of economic development in Indonesia. This is because IP protection can provide both material and moral benefits to society, stemming from the ideas and products produced by IP.

Therefore, the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), as the leading sector in IP law enforcement in Indonesia, continues to strive to improve IP protection for the public. This is evidenced by the implementation of established programs and targets for IP legal protection by May 2024.

"As of May 2024, the Directorate of Investigation and Dispute Resolution has implemented IP Violation Prevention activities for Business Actors in the Regions at 48 of the 60 targeted locations," explained Budi Hadisetyono, Head of the Complaints Working Team.

"We have also completed 13 mediation requests and closed 240 illegal websites, involving Civil Servant Investigators (PPNS), the Ministry of Information and Communication, and representatives from the Directorate of Copyright and Industrial Design," he continued.

On that occasion, Budi also stated that the Directorate of Investigation and Dispute Resolution had also resolved 40 cases in 2024, one of which was the Asita Trademark case.

"On the same note, we have also implemented one of DJKI's flagship programs, the Intellectual Property (IP) Crime Forum, held on May 6-8, 2024, at JS Luwansa, Jakarta," Budi said.

This activity, which is part of a series of World IP Day activities, discusses the development of online IP violations and their solutions, the effectiveness and efficiency of the coordination system to prevent the entry of counterfeit goods, sharing best practices for enforcing IP violations, and strategies to improve the Indonesian economy.

"In 2025, we have also prepared a flagship program, namely the Settlement of Backlog Cases, which aims to accelerate the settlement of backlog cases by mapping the problems encountered in each Complaint Report (LP) to produce appropriate solutions for their resolution," said Budi.

In addition to explaining the achievements that have been achieved until May 2024, on that occasion, the DJKI program that will run from 2025 to 2029 was also presented.

"The hope is that each region can form a PPNS unit consisting of 2-4 PPNS with prevention duties, and the Directorate of Trademarks and IG can collaborate or establish a Memorandum of Understanding with stakeholders or Law Enforcement Officers such as the DJKI," Budi concluded.

With these steps, DJKI hopes to strengthen IP protection and encourage Indonesia's economic development through better IP utilization.
