Cecep Norwendaya, a member of the Ministry of Religious Affairs' (Kemenag) Hisab Rukyat Team, stated that the 2025 Eid al-Fitr celebrations are special. This is because the ijtimak (convergence) process used to determine the beginning of the Hijri month coincides with a solar eclipse. "We see this as geocentric, but what's interesting is that today's ijtimak is marked by a solar phenomenon. Today's partial solar eclipse is approaching the beginning of Shawwal 1446 AH," Cecep said during a seminar held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs on Saturday (March 29, 2025).

Astronomically, the ijtimak occurred at 5:57 PM WIB. Compared to the geocentric approach, the solar eclipse would occur almost simultaneously, as the moon is located approximately 0.16 degrees north of the sun.

"According to Mabims (the Southeast Asian ministers of religious affairs cooperation forum), the eclipse will occur on Saturday Kliwon, the 29th of Ramadan," he said. However, Cecep stated that the solar eclipse cannot be seen from Indonesia. Instead, it can only be seen from the northwestern African continent, Europe, and northern Russia. "We see the maximum eclipse at 17:47:24.2 WIB, similar to the ijtimak. Why is it different? The difference is that an eclipse is topocentric when viewed from the Earth's surface, while the elongation we use is geocentric (in determining ijtimak)," he explained.

"We can see that the area through which the partial solar eclipse passes doesn't pass directly over us. So, the northwest, Africa, Europe, and Russia. So, almost 94 percent of the sun is covered by the moon, marking a special ijtimak. This ijtimak can correct our calculations, whether they are accurate or not," he concluded.
