Seljalanfoss the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland

Seljalandsfoss is one of the most stunning waterfalls in South Iceland with a 196 ft (60 m) drop. This waterfall is loved by tourists because you can actually walk behind it! Step behind the curtain of water and admire Iceland's South Coast from a whole new perspective.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall in Iceland was featured in films and music videos. Justin Bieber's music video for the song "I'll Show You" was filmed at many attractions in South Iceland, including Seljalandsfoss. Parts of the TV series "The Amazing Race 6" and "CKY2K" were shot near the waterfall. Well, of course you definitely want to see this very popular waterfall. 

This waterfall is formed by the Seljalands River which originates from the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier Volcano. Filled with glacier meltwater, the river flows south and cascades down high, sheer cliff walls.

Seljalandsfoss once flowed all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Today, a piece of lowland lies between the ocean and the waterfall. You can see the ocean and stunning views of the South Coast from the top of the waterfall.

The waters of Seljalandsfoss consist of pure glacial water from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. You may remember this name from 2010, because Eyjafjallajökull was also the name of a volcano that spontaneously erupted, wreaking havoc on European air traffic, causing airports to be completely closed for about 5 days.

In winter, the area around Seljalandsfoss is simply stunning, as you would expect! At night the waterfall is illuminated with the help of two giant beams of light which create a mystical glow on the waterfall which is truly spectacular. Worth a try. This area is like a Christmas winter wonderland, with frozen ground and snow-covered crystal ice. At this time, the area is at its best - photogenic-wise!

But winter in Seljalandsfoss also has its drawbacks, ice on the paths can be dangerous and it is important to pay attention to your destination when exploring the area on foot. Wear good shoes or boots that have good tread for snow so you don't slip easily.

The OLIV exploration team has visited this most beautiful waterfall several times and was amazed by the beauty on offer. What a wonderful view. 

Circling the falls from behind isn't always possible in the winter, but visiting in the winter is still a great option! On dark nights, the waterfall is illuminated by a huge beam of light. It makes a great focal point for your photos with the stunning dancing aurora in the background.
