10th World Water Forum - Global Collaboration for Water Resilience

The 10th World Water Forum initiated the establishment of the Center of Excellence (CoE) on Water and Climate Resilience in the Asia-Pacific region. This Center of Excellence is expected to become a collaboration platform for countries in the southern hemisphere that often face disaster-related issues concerning water and water management.

This was stated by the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati in Special Session 9 of the 10th World Water Forum at Pecatu Room 3, Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center 2 (BNDCC 2), Bali, Wednesday (22/5/2024).

"Collaboration and partnership are the most important aspects in the CoE. This involves various stakeholders including the government, private sector, and academia," he said.

"Partnerships are said to be very important to leverage various resources, expertise, and technologies needed for the CoE to effectively address various water and climate-related issues. Furthermore, Dwikorita stated that as an archipelagic country, Indonesia is at the forefront of facing these environmental and climate challenges."

He stated that there are many challenges faced by Indonesia in the last 30 years in overcoming the water crisis. However, Indonesia continues to have innovations in technology development and conducts research development.

"Dwikorita also mentioned that each country actually already has its own CoE, for example, Indonesia with the CoE Weather and Climate that focuses on training expertise in the field of human resources and receiving support from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)."

"For more than 13 years, the Sabo Center has been in existence, where Sabo technology has been introduced to young experts in related fields in the Asia Pacific and Africa," he said.

"For your information, sabo comes from two words in Japanese, namely 'sa' which means sand and 'bo' which means control. Sabo technology is a technique used to anticipate debris flow and sediment control in a landscape, particularly in rivers on mountains."

Previously, the Expert Staff of the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) in the fields of Technology, Industry, and Environment, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, stated that the CoE is the answer to the climate challenges we are currently facing in the world.

Endra stated that in the establishment of the CoE, Indonesia will focus on strengthening South-South Cooperation (SSC).

"Through the CoE, Endra said, Southern countries facing issues related to flooding, sediment from destructive eruptions affecting rivers, and other water management problems will educate each other, exchange ideas, and share experiences to find the best solutions that can be implemented in practice."
